Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has promoted nine lawyers to the rank of counsel in firm’s latest round of promotions.

Five of the new counsel come from the firm’s finance practice, with the promotions spread across Freshfields’ offices in Amsterdam, Abu Dhabi, Cologne, Frankfurt, Dubai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and London.

The magic circle firm has two rounds of counsel promotions each year, with six promoted last October 2009 and 10 making the grade this time last year.

The role of counsel was introduced to offer the firm’s lawyers an alternative career path to partnership and is the most senior legal role in the firm below that of partner.

Freshfields chief executive Ted Burke said: “These candidates all demonstrate outstanding qualities, excelling in both their legal expertise and overall contribution to the firm. As counsel, they will play an important role in developing their respective practice areas.”

The promotions, which are effective from 1 May, follow the recent announcement that 18 lawyers are set to join the firm’s partnership.
