Magic circle firm sets up new committee to handle recruitment

Clifford Chance (CC) has installed a nine-partner committee to oversee the law firm’s recruitment, replacing its former system of handing responsibility to a sole recruitment partner.

CC decided on the overhaul in January following the retirement of full-time City recruitment partner Lynn Johansen from the partnership at the end of last year.

The magic circle law firm invited all six of its practice groups to nominate partners for the committee, resulting in the new nine-member group, which includes representatives from all departments.

The committee members are: finance partners Karen Hodson, Nick Swinburne and Simon Williams; corporate partners Kem Ihenacho and Nigel Wellings; capital markets partner Emma Matebalavu; real estate partner Sarah Thomas; tax, pensions and employment partner Sarah Squires and litigation partner Julian Acratopulo.

The move is unusual as most City law firms have either one partner solely responsible for recruitment or two partners sharing the role.

The tasks formerly handled by CC’s recruitment partner – which include managing relationships with universities and legal education providers and visiting campuses to promote the firm – will all now fall under the remit of the new committee. Former recruitment partner Johansen, who joined CC in 1983 and made partner in 1995, has remained at the firm as a consultant.

The committee held its first meeting in February and is due to meet again next month to flesh out how it will divide the responsibilities in the upcoming recruitment round.

CC recruitment manager Sarah Langton ( pictured ) said: “The idea is that the committee will aid the recruitment process by its members having a wider insight into the needs of each practice group due to its wide spread. Also, dividing the tasks over a group of partners will help free up time so that the partners can more effectively continue with fee earning.”
